DC Comics writer Tom King addresses the chances of the scrapped NewGods movie being revived. 'I love that script. I loved working with Ava. It was an absolute joy. She's a genius storyteller.'

DC Comics writer Tom King talks about whether or not the canceled New Gods movie may get revived in the future. Based on Jack Kirby's Fourth World characters, New Gods was one of the DC Universe films that Warner Bros. spent years working on. King, who has written several major DC Comics titles, was penning the screenplay with filmmaker Ava DuVernay, with the film expected to explore the deeper history of New Genesis, as well as Apokolips.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY With over a year gone since WB pulled the plug on both his project and James Wan's The Trench, King recently addressed the possibility of the New Gods movie getting revived while speaking with Comic Book Resources. The DC Comics writer noted that he is busy with a variety of other projects, but confirmed his interest to reunite with DuVernay and pick back up the DCU project.

"Ah, I mean, anything's possible. I love that script. I loved working with Ava. It was an absolute joy. She's a genius storyteller. You absolutely never know. I don't want to close any doors. Right now, I'm just so incredibly busy. I have so much on my plate. It'd be hard to see taking on a whole movie right now. But that script has never been read. The movie was taken off the docket because it conflicted with the plans they had at the time.

Despite the fact that Gunn and Safran's DCU plans have yet to be revealed in detail, there is a major advantage for New Gods that may make the film get a chance at happening. One of the things that Gunn is known for, especially with the DCU projects he has already worked on, is his interest in exploring DC Comics characters who aren't necessarily A or B-list players.

While it doesn't guarantee that New Gods will be resurrected, it also doesn't close the door on that possibility, especially if Gunn and Safran see those characters as being worthy of being part of the new DCU plans. If it can't be explored as a movie, New Gods could always be re-tooled as a TV show, similar to how Netflix did with The Sandman.
