Ards and North Down council officer says he is 'extremely extremely disappointed' with media report
Elected members and officials at Ards and North Down Council have criticised local media and denied reports that seven out of the borough's nine household recycling centres are to close.
He said the reports were “grossly inaccurate” and said the council “had to do something to put that wrong, right.” He said when the media gets it wrong the council “should be in there right away, rather than give them a free run, as if there is credence to totally inaccurate comments.” “It is very difficult to have a transformation programme in terms of public services generally, and we are all aware that transformation is absolutely essential if we are to make sure those services are sustainable into the future, not least our waste management services.
Earlier in the summer councillors agreed to introduce a new online booking system for access to its nine household recycling centres, meaning that access to any of the nine centres only became possible via a pre-booked slot. The change met some resistance from locals, with a petition on campaigning website Change.org opposing the rules receiving thousands of signatures.
“We are not playing that game, we are not playing a numbers game, that is why I suggested the word transformation. It also said in the article there was a softening in the DUP’s position - that is utter nonsense as the DUP’s position has always been consistent on that. "This is a responsible action by the council on behalf of ratepayers to ensure that these facilities are fit for purpose into the future and that the service is improved where necessary to ensure the best possible outcomes in relation to sustainable waste resource management.
