Initially 61 trees were expected to be felled
North Northamptonshire Council’s leader has called on a developer to ask the authority for permission to amend an application that allows the felling of treasured trees in Wellingborough. Coun Jason Smithers said any proposal to stop the felling of trees along The Walks would need to come from the Vistry Group.
to make way for a dual carriageway for the Stanton Cross development. That has now been cut to 38.Coun Smithers told a NNC council meeting last night : “It’s a very clear message to Vistry: if you want to change your application to save those trees as you have said. We will listen. Fellow Conservative Councillor Andrew Weatherill said a meeting held with other members in February showed there had been “serious communication problems” between NNC and the developers. He said he had “personally felt misled” at the time.
At the same meeting, NNC councillors approved measures to impose further scrutiny on planning applications which would result in the removal of trees. A motion brought by Labour's Coun Valerie Anslow asked for any planning applications that would lead to the removal of trees to be “supported by the advice of a suitably qualified officer”.
