It’s been more than two years since Connie and Larry Stagg were caught in the crossfire, but they’re still wondering how they were put in a life-threatening situation in the first place.
“The gun barrel was pointed at my head, and he didn’t like that so he pushed the gun barrel away from my head and that’s when the first shot went off,” said Connie Stagg. “At that point in time, OnStar came on and said, ‘I see you’ve been in an accident, do you need an ambulance’, and of course I told her, I haven’t been in an accident somebody just shot at our car.”
Klein was at their vehicle for more than a minute. Suddenly, Connie was able to gain control of the car and started to drive away. Klein fired more shots and ran behind the stolen sheriff’s vehicle to take cover.“I pulled over and I backed up as close to that semi as I could and we sat there and Larry says, I think I’ve been shot,” said Connie.
The Staggs haven’t been on a road trip since. A portion of Larry’s leg is gone because of the shooting. He later learned that one of the gunshots from Klein went directly through the back of Connie’s headrest in the driver’s seat. Both feel they should have never been in the situation in the first place and are wondering why Klein wasn’t in handcuffs during the initial traffic stop.
