General Election 2020: Couple who ran in same constituency for different parties both get elected
Duelling lovers Christopher O’Sullivan and Holly Cairns both polled well in Cork South West, winning 11,262 and 10,078 votes respectively.
Cairns – a Social Democrat candidate – described running against her partner, who is representing Fianna Fail as like “being in a badly scripted romcom.”His partner was back in fifth spot but was set to contest the last seat with Fine Gael and Sinn Fein, before both eventually being elected on the eight count. It's the first time in more than 60 years that the constituency has not returned a Fine Gael TD.
The two parties are now just 2/1 to enter a coalition together, after Micheal Martin last night appeared to leave the door open to doing business with Mary Lou McDonald.
