Israeli Ambassador Dana Elrich accused President Michael D Higgins of being 'misinformed' in his comments about the Israel/Palestine conflict.
Simon Coveney has criticised “pointed” and “unhelpful” comments made by the Israeli Ambassador accusing President Michael D Higgins of “spreading misinformation”.
Mr Higgins said: “To announce in advance that you will break international law and to do so on an innocent population, it reduces all the code that was there from the Second World War on protection of civilians and it reduces it to tatters.”In an interview with the Sunday Independent, Ms Elrich accused President Higgins of “misinformation” and of making “inflammatory” comments.
“President Michael D Higgins is somebody who for many years has taken an interest in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he said.“I don't think it's helpful when the Ambassador starts to make pointed comments in relation to our President.“The Government's position on this is that we unreservedly condemn the atrocity that Hamas is responsible for in terms of the killing of 1,400 innocent Israelis.
Labour leader Ivana Bacik said that Ms Elrich’s position was “under question” following her comments about President Higgins.
