Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs SimonCoveney has said he hopes history will be made as Northern Ireland's political parties are expected to indicate if they will back proposals to restore power-sharing. |
The Speaker of the Assembly has been asked by Northern Ireland Secretary Julian Smith to convene a meeting in the Stormont Chamber where the future of proposed agreement will be decided.
"One of the big breakthroughs in this document is we have found a way for the Irish language in Northern Ireland." Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Coveney said he believes if the parties look for "positives in this deal" there will be more than enough to back it.Mr Coveney said that yesterday was an end point for the Irish and British governments in terms of "endless negotiations with the parties" to put in place a foundation document to establish a government "that will last this time".
Speaking on the same programme, she indicated she will accept the proposed power-sharing deal, describing it as "fair and balanced". She said they had full and open discussions with their assembly members, elected representatives, MPs and MEPs yesterday and "it was a good discussion and there was a recognition that it was a balanced deal but a challenging one".
With the UK government promising major financial support if devolution returns, Mr Smith said he had received assurances from trade union leaders that if the parties re-enter government they will call off the action."The money is there," he said.
