Anyone missing out in 2023 may be able to buy a Covid booster privately next year after health officials gave the green light to private sales for the first time

they are open to “alternative supply routes”. Ready-filled syringes, not used at present for Covid shots, would probably be used, rather than vials containing several doses, which are used by the NHS. Industry figures said making the switch would take time meaning availability would probably be from spring at the earliest.

NPA chair Nick Kaye said that offering the jab privately was a sensible move, but warned that doing so must not distract from the public programme which had got off to “a shaky start” this year due to some confusion when it started.: “An option to get vaccinated against Covid privately could make sense for many people who want to protect themselves and their families against infection but are ineligible for an NHS jab.

“Pharmacies played a major role in the roll out of the NHS Covid vaccination programme, protecting well over 30 million people and saving lives. Given our proven track record, it’s likely that pharmacies would also be a popular choice for private provision too. Any private developments must not distract from successful implementation of the free of charge NHS service to vulnerable people, who must always take priority.
