Sinn Féin's health spokesperson David Cullinane has said the different projections laid out by the CMO yesterday regarding the situation with Covid-19 were 'sobering and quite stark'.

Sinn Féin's health spokesperson David Cullinane has said the different projections laid out by the CMO yesterday regarding the situation with Covid-19 were "sobering and quite stark".

He said the government's job is to look at every eventuality and it has been known for the last number of weeks that NPHET had the potential to suggest pausing re-opening."We need to be making decisions as quickly as possible because we know speed is really important when you're dealing with a variant where transmissibility is much higher than other variants of this disease."

Mr Cullinane called for the government to release a revised timeframe of 'what is the finishing line, how many people need to be vaccinated' and how quickly this can happen. Amid criticism from some of his party's TDs and Senator over the plan to allow only vaccinated people inside bars and restaurants, the Taoiseach said the Government was open minded on the issue and would look at testing, protocols and vaccinations.

It was confirmed yesterday that these scenarios were prepared before the National Immunisation Advisory Committee changed its advice allowing younger people receive a greater range of vaccines. However, some ministers not on that committee understood from comments by the Taoiseach that this update had been factored into forecasts by the National Public Health Emergency Team.

In a series of tweets, Professor Philip Nolan detailed the methodology and assumptions behind the modelling which produced the figures on which the decision to defer the reopening of indoor hospitality is based.
