Thousands needed hospital treatment after lockdown household accidents

New NHS figures show that thousands of people injured in household accidents were admitted to English hospitals during Covid-19 lockdowns.

While the average age of these adventurers was nine-and-a-half years old, dozens of parents and grandparents were also injured. Working from home saw everyday household items pose a fresh hazard, with 2,243 people needing attention after coming into contact with hot drinks, food, fats and cooking oils.

Despite spending more time at home, the number of people needing assistance after being struck by lightning rose from three cases in 2019/20 to 18 in 2020/21.
