Crash into popular Southern California taco stand kills man, injures 12 people; driver arrested

The woman initially ran away from the car after the crash, but later surrendered, police said.

A 26-year-old Pomona woman turned herself in to police more than an hour after she allegedly crashed her car into a popular taco stand in Pomona, killing a man and injuring 12 others Friday night, Oct. 14, authorities said.

Gilberto Cazares Payan, 52, was identified by the coroner Saturday morning as the man who was killed. Police said they believe he lived in Pomona. Payan’s goddaughter told ABC7 that the father of four was picking up dinner at the taco stand. Nine others suffered minor injuries and were either taken by ambulance or private vehicle to hospitals, she said.

She immediately ran off after the crash, Mejia said. Pomona police K9 units helped search for the woman, along with officers from Claremont and Montclair police departments.
