An aircraft that crash-landed at Belfast City Airport three days before Christmas will undergo further examinations as investigators look into the incident. \At around 4pm on Sunday, December 22, an ATR 72 plane, operated by Emerald Airlines for Aer Lingus, encountered an emergency while attempting to land in strong winds, according to Belfast Live.
\The nose wheel of the aircraft appeared to collapse during landing and emergency crews responded while the plane remained on the runway afterwards. \Four crew members were on board at the time, and there were no reported injuries. All flights in and out of Belfast City Airport were canceled as a result of the incident, disrupting the travel plans of many passengers so close to Christmas. The runway reopened on Monday, December 23. \The involved aircraft remains on the grounds of Belfast City Airport, and it is unclear when it will be able to return to service. \In a statement to Belfast Live, a spokeswoman for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said: 'The aircraft has not been moved because it is due to undergo further examination work as part of the ongoing investigation.' Investigations of this nature by the AAIB can take between nine to 12 months to complete. \The spokeswoman added: 'Our investigation into the accident on December 22 is still ongoing and it is too early to provide an update.' \A spokesperson for Emerald Airlines, the exclusive operator of Aer Lingus Regional services, said that 'ongoing reviews' are taking place when asked by Belfast Live if it could comment on when the aircraft might be fit to resume service. \'An Emerald Airlines positioning flight, EA701P, with no passengers on board, flying from Edinburgh to Belfast City Airport, 22nd December 2024, experienced a hard landing upon arriving into Belfast City Airport due to adverse weather conditions. Due to ongoing reviews, we will not be providing further comment at this time.
