Veronica Guerin was a decent, honest person. It is truly shocking she lies in a cold grave while the man responsible is living up the high life in Spain
During my lifetime two journalists have been shot dead in Ireland for doing their job, Veronica Guerin and Martin O'Hagan.
I would have bumped into her and spoken to her a couple of times down at the Central Criminal courts which is where most smart reporters would go to rub shoulders with the cops and the lawyers in the hunt for stories. But she raddled many cages and touched a lot of nerves in the underworld which brought her to the attention of two real nasty pieces of work - John Gilligan or Factory John as he was called and notorious fraudster, conman and Garda informer John Traynor.Traynor became one of Veronica's sources but he double crossed her numerous times and set her up to be killed.
Gilligan was making millions smuggling cannabis into Ireland and saw Veronica and her stories as a threat to his empire.Like many other reporters who have taken on criminals and terrorists she would never really in her heart believed that they would cross the line and shoot her.
