The Chair of the Council of the Bar of Ireland has said its members will be carrying out a day of strike action this week as they 'haven't gotten anywhere' regarding the restoration of fees.
Sara Phelan said they"very reluctantly" had to take an unprecedented recommendation to their members to have a day of protest on Tuesday.
"What we are looking for is that that level of fee would be restored to what had been prior to the austerity era cuts." "What than means is that in the years to come there will be a dearth of experienced and skillful practitioners to both prosecute crimes...and to defend those accused of crime," she said.Ms Whelan said there is"pent up frustration" among members, but welcomed Minister for Justice Helen McEntee brining the issue forward as part of Budget discusssion.
Speaking on RTÉ's This Week programme, Ms McEntee said:"What I've said very clearly and I've said it directly to the barristers, is that I'm engaging with my colleague, as part of Budget negotiations but I won't and I can't say anything further at the moment."
