Mark Leiter Jr., who was signed to a minor-league deal in December, makes his Cubs debut Saturday as the Cubs use a fifth starter for the first time.
"When you watch some of the young guys go out, you just want to make sure the adrenaline, the emotions are kept under control," Ross said of landing on the selection of Leiter for Saturday."You have a little less of that with a guy that's had some big-league time."
Ross did not say what the plan is for corresponding moves on either the active roster or the 40-man roster. But Manny Rodriguez, who’s on the 40-man roster, has been on the Triple-A injured list since suffering an elbow strain earlier in the week. Putting him on the 60-day IL would clear a 40-man spot if the Cubs determine it might need that much time to be shut down and then rehab.
