'I always assumed that going for a cervical smear test meant I was overly sexually active'

To remedy this issue, many, including Dr Daniel, advocate for cultural-specific education, especially targeting communities with low awareness. “Education needs to be done early, in schools if possible. Leaflets should be available in multiple languages online,” she explains. For instance, “cervical screening letters can offer more information in other languages, signposting to charities.

Moreover, Helen, a 28-year-old civil servant based in London, says that “in the British Chinese community, there is more awareness around such screenings, but what holds many back from getting a test is embarrassment.” She adds, “The thought of having your genitals examined makes me feel anxious, and I think that discomfort may be a deterrent for many like me.”Dr Daniel has some words of reassurance for women going for their first cervical screening.

More generally, Dr Daniel urges that all women get a screening, especially when smear tests are life-saving and free services on the NHS: “Early change can be treated, and early intervention saves lives. It is important to note that while screening does not detect cancer, it detects abnormal cells that could become cancer left untreated for some time.” And as always, prevention is key when it comes to our health.
