We had a vast trading network across the Americas. Goods from across the continent were traded among the various tribes.

It was an example of an ancient trade route that existed long before the Spanish arrived and ruined these peoples’ lives and country. Argillite is a mineral from Haida Gwaii that is used in carvings and today it is protected for the exclusive use of the Haida. The rock is moist and easy to carve when it is quarried. Later it hardens when it dries out. These carvings were traded among First Nations and examples have been found on the plains and far inland.
When the fur traders and explorers went inland in North America, they used existing Indigenous trails and waterways to “discover” the new land. The fur trade was not a wholesale change in culture; Indigenous people used trade goods to supplement their culture and way of life.Article content
