D.C. aid groups are responding to Gov. Greg Abbott sending migrants from the southern border to the nation's capital, a move they say is meant to 'overwhelm systems of support' for migrants.
PUBLISHED 3:16 PM CDT Jul. 27, 2022WASHINGTON — Since April, the State of Texas has been bussing recently arrived migrants from the southern border all the way to Washington, D.C. as a part of a protest by Gov. Greg Abbott against the Biden administration’s immigration and border policies. Arizona Gov. D.C. resident Amy Fischer often uses her lunch break to volunteer helping asylum seekers who come on buses from Texas and Arizona. “The bussing of peoples by Governor Abbott and Governor [Doug] Ducey is intended to show harm. It's intended to overwhelm systems of support,” Fisher said. “We want to show a different message, we want to show a message of welcome.”
The district’s representative in Congress also plans to introduce an emergency appropriations bill to ensure there is more money available under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-District of Columbia, told Spectrum News that funding would be designated for humanitarian aid to the migrants bused from the Republican-led states.
