Negotiations to resolve the Dáil speaking row between the government and opposition have broken down, casting doubt on the resumption of normal Dáil business next week. Both sides rejected proposals aimed at addressing the concerns of Regional Independents who are seeking increased speaking time.
The prospect of Dáil business resuming as normal next Wednesday is now in serious jeopardy as both the government and opposition rejected proposals to solve the Dáil speaking row.
The Government proposed the four TDs should be put in a “hybrid group” that “may support the government on a case by case basis”. They would have a right to quiz the Taoiseach in Leaders’ Questions. "This substantial proposal was a concession brought forward by the Government, as it was a significant issue raised by the Opposition.
In a joint letter to the Taoiseach on Friday evening, the opposition leaders expressed "strong opposition to this Government proposal", branding it "entirely unacceptable". Asked if there would be more disruption in the Dáil next Wednesday, Mr Mac Lochlainn said “you couldn’t rule anything out”.
