Opposition parties in Ireland have called for various reforms to the Dáil, including the removal of the daily prayer and a change in voting schedules, amidst ongoing controversy over speaking time for government-supporting independent TDs.

The opposition has called for the removal of the Dáil prayer, moving voting blocks to a Thursday to avoid TDs leaving Dublin early and shortening the length of time bells ring for as part of Dáil reforms.

It also suggested that Dáil Business should start from 9.30am on Wednesdays after a recess or a bank holiday rather than 2pm. It called for public representatives to declare significant liabilities, such as aggregate borrowings greater than €500,000 from any given lender. The Soc Dems also said that replacing the Dáil prayer that is read out at the start of each day with a "practice that reflects the increasingly secular practice of the public who elect us, and that respects the beliefs and conscience of those of all faiths and none" should be considered.
