The Irish Dáil (parliament) remains embroiled in a controversy over speaking rights, with the Regional Independent Group defending their right to speak for the Opposition despite their participation in the formation of the Government.

A dispute over speaking rights in the Irish Dáil (parliament) continues, with the Regional Independent Group arguing that a TD (Teach Dála, Member of Parliament) involved in the formation of the Government should be allowed to speak for the Opposition . This issue sparked chaos in the Dáil last week, temporarily disrupting Micheál Martin's election as Taoiseach (Prime Minister).

Opposition parties have united against Michael Lowry TD, a member of the Regional Independent Group, claiming he cannot be considered part of the Opposition as he played a pivotal role in establishing the Government and has committed to supporting it. Following meetings between party leaders, a committee was established to examine a proposed amendment to Dáil rules. This amendment aims to prevent individuals who participated in negotiating a programme for government and pledged their support from claiming Opposition speaking time. The committee met for a second time on Monday, but no resolution has been reached. Cian O'Callaghan, deputy leader of the Social Democrats, criticized the Government for accommodating Mr. Lowry, stating that it has caused significant damage and instability. He called on the Government to sever ties with Mr. Lowry, ending all preferential treatment and arrangements made in exchange for his support. Mr. Lowry's group, in its submission to the committee, argued that a TD should be able to participate in a programme for government while still speaking for the Opposition. They emphasized that TDs should have the freedom to align themselves with technical groups based on shared interests, and questioned the authority of the Ceann Comhairle (Speaker of the Dáil) or any third party to dictate these affiliations. The Government is expected to propose the final wording of the amendment on Thursday, when it will become clear if a resolution can be achieved
