Jon Paul Dowler, 52, of Otsego, died Sunday, Jan. 22, when he accidentally drove into Lake Macatawa but his girls escaped through the hatchback, Ottawa County sheriff's deputies said.
OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – Police think that a man who accidentally drove into Lake Macatawa popped the back hatch as his car was sinking to let his girls out.His daughters, ages 8 and 10, escaped the vehicle through the back and got to shore around 2 a.m. Sunday. They looked for help but the neighborhood, with many residents gone for the winter, was so dark that they huddled on a porch and waited for daylight.Ottawa County sheriff’s Lt.
The body of a man was found inside this vehicle Sunday, Jan. 22, after it was pulled out of Lake Macatawa. “He was trying to break his windows to get out. It looks like he possibly popped” the hatch release to let his girls out. The hatch was open when the submerged car was recovered.
