He will be playing Willy Loman in the production of Arthur Miller’s classic play Death of a Salesman: 'I don’t like to be influenced by other actors, I love to come at it completely fresh'
Death of a Salesman’s David Hayman has told how he “feels completely at home in Dublin ” as the production arrives in Ireland this week.
Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman brings audiences through the final 24 hours of Willy Loman’s life, filled with his memories, dreams, and struggles — and pitting a father’s expectations against his son’s realities. The Scottish actor recalled how he and Andy Arnold, who is directing the show, had “success last year with Cypress Avenue, a wonderful contemporary play about Northern Ireland” — and after that, they were asked what they’d like to do next.“They came back a while later and said, ‘you’re on!’ Which was wonderful for us.
“And he's a disaster. He can't do it, he says time has passed. All the men he knew before, all the contacts he made before, they're all retired or dead. “But I don’t like to be influenced by other actors, I love to come at it completely fresh and have my own take on it. He said, “I haven’t been for quite a few years, and I just love it. It’s a great city — and a fellow Celtic city.
“I mean, I loved playing Lady Macbeth, that was very revolutionary with an all male company. I loved doing King Lear, because it’s such a great role — one of the great Shakespearean tragedies. “I’ve done about 30 documentaries, and people stop and ask me about my documentaries or compliment me on them. And that's lovely, because it's an important part of my work. I've always loved doing documentaries.”He said, “You travel around the country with just a director, a camera, sound and a producer and that's it.
