Co-op’s move will boost cheese capacity by 20,000 tonnes and increase production of whey protein concentrate
Dale Farm chief executive Nick Whelan with chairman Fred Allen and group operations director Chris McAlinden at the announcement of a £70m investment at its Tyrone cheddar cheese plant.The co-op says the investment, announced on Monday, is one of the largest in the history of Northern Ireland ’s agri-food industry and will boost production at the Tyrone plant by 20,000 tonnes a year.
It comes on the back of successive years of impressive growth for the co-operative, which is owned by 1,300 farmers across Northern Ireland, England and Scotland and employs about 1,200 people. “As well as improving and replacing existing site-wide services and utilities, the expansion will include a new high-speed automated cheese slicing line, an increased warehouse footprint and investment in new patented products and processes,” said Mr Whelan.
