Dallas County received doses of the monkeypox vaccine Monday after days of waiting for additional supplies from the federal government.
Dallas County received more than 5,100 doses of the monkeypox vaccine Monday afterWhile the influx of doses is good news as cases of the virus continue to rise, the county health department will likely have to make the vaccines last through the next month. The Texas Department of State Health Services was told additional vaccines won’t be available until late August or early September, spokesperson Chris Van Deusen said.
Currently, the county is limiting vaccines to people who have had known skin-to-skin contact with an infected individual, a number that is increasing with every confirmed case. The county aims to eventually expand vaccine appointments to more people, but it depends on how many doses are made available, Huang said. Cities across the country are scrambling to stretch vaccine supplies to combat the smallpox-like virus amid a nationwide shortage.
Texas’ case count – 107 as of July 22 – is increasing, but it’s still much lower than some other parts of the country. New York reported 900 cases, while California reported 356, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.
