Mayor Eric Johnson called the boy’s 1973 murder a “disgrace” and an “unimaginable trauma” during a ceremony Saturday.
“A Dallas police officer, a grown man, cruelly and carelessly took the life of a 12-year-old boy,” Mayor Eric Johnson said during the dedication. “The murder of Santos Rodriguez was a shame on our city and it was a disgrace to the honorable men and women who proudly serve the Dallas police department and, most tragically, it was unimaginable trauma for the Rodriguez family.”
But Rodriguez did not receive an apology from the city until 2013, from then-mayor Mike Rawlings. Last year, Dallas police Chief Eddie García also apologized, in English and Spanish, to the mother at a cemetery memorial for the boy.
