Dallas residents deserve more than ‘good enough’ in new year | Opinion

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson speaks during a ceremony for the distinguished service award at Dallas City Hall in Dallas, Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022. Johnson writes that the city should prioritize public safety, parks, and homelessness in 2023.We have a lot to feel good about despite, you know,: a global pandemic, devastating tornadoes, statewide winter freezes, record rain storms, a global economic recession, high inflation and other assorted calamities.

To be clear, we should celebrate our milestones and our progress, and I’m aware that in an imperfect world, we can’t really expect perfection. But we should always pursue it regardless. To borrow a phrase from Theodore Roosevelt, if we fail, at least we’ll do so while daring greatly. That’s part of what drove me, three years ago, to demand a violent crime reduction plan from our Dallas Police Department. The result then, unfortunately, was a plan that, at best, could be deemed by some as “good enough.”However, the next year, Police Chief Eddie Garcia took office and thoughtfully developed a new plan in consultation with criminologists.

Our parks system has only become better since my childhood with amazing additions such as Klyde Warren Park, new downtown parks, new aquatics centers, and miles of new trails — many of which were built from illegal dumping grounds and ugly surface parking lots. More are in the pipeline. Let’s be bold. Now is the time to ensure that all of Dallas, including Fair Park, can become greener and greater in the years ahead.Like almost every major city in the United States, our city’s homeless population has grown in recent years. While homelessness here is nowhere near the scale seen in many of those other cities, it is nevertheless a problem that we must address.
