Review: Dallas Symphony’s concert performance of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Nutcracker’ was aptly enchanting | Scott Cantrell
Nutcracker
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra several years ago began presenting concert performances of Tchaikovsky’s score — much more of it than the familiarSuite excerpts. In two seasons, it was elegantly performed under guest conductor Andrew Grams.returned to the Meyerson Symphony Center Friday night, this time under DSO assistant conductor Maurice Cohn. Cohn clearly loves the score — itStart to finish, it sprang with balletic grace, seducing when it should and dazzling elsewhere.
The performance opened with surprising scruffiness from the violins. But thereafter the orchestra played with skill and spirit. Brasses were especially splendid in their moments to shine, with real snap to the First Act March, and cellos beautifully spun out their big Second Act tune. I missed the children’s chorus, though, in the Waltz of the Snowflakes.
This week-by-week shifting must be a challenge for the musicians. With only minimal risers for winds and brasses, players have trouble seeing and hearing one another, and balances are distorted for main floor listeners. With the first row of winds on such low risers, oboe sound is dried out and weakened.
