Olympic gold medalist gymnast Rhys McClenaghan and fellow Olympian Jack Woolley emphasize the strong sense of camaraderie and support among the remaining contestants on Dancing with the Stars. The upcoming Dedicated Dance Night promises to be emotional as couples pay tribute to their heroes and inspirations.
Olympic gold medalist gymnast Rhys McClenaghan has downplayed talk of a backstage rivalry with fellow Olympian Jack Woolley on Dancing with the Stars. Last Sunday, Rhys earned his first two 10s of the season after he and his professional dance partner, Laura Nolan, delivered a spectacular Charleston on the RTE One show. However, Taekwondo Olympian Jack Woolley and his professional partner Alex Vladimirov also topped the leaderboard, dancing an impressive Tango for movie night.
When asked if Jack was his competition, Rhys responded, 'Everyone on the show is competing for the top spot on the leaderboard.' But his professional dance partner Laura clarified that they weren't specifically competing against any other couple. She stated, 'No, I don't feel like we're competing against one particular couple, to be honest. 'Again, if you have that mindset of we are competing against ourselves and go out and give ourselves the best, At the end of the day, we are not in control of what happens on the leaderboard. 'We are in control of going out and performing and giving our best. So no, we don't feel like that whatsoever,' she explained. Rhys added, 'Yeah, we talk to Jack and Alex, and we all get along really well on the show. It's a nice atmosphere, with everyone genuinely wishing the best for each other. 'I look forward to Saturday and Sunday nights because you get to see a bit of everything from everyone. And I'm just like a spectator on the show, watching everyone and enjoying it to its fullest. 'So I really look forward to it, not only for my dance but to see everyone else's too.' Laura Nolan further emphasized the supportive environment, saying, 'It's a very strong team. 'I think the professionals support each other, and I think that feeds down into the contestants. 'So instead of a competitive atmosphere, everyone is supporting each other. 'And you see that when the cameras are even on the live show, when everyone does their dance and then gets their scores, everyone is over with each other being, like, ‘well done, brilliant’. 'You know, in particular, from a professional's perspective, most pros are always helping each other. 'Myself and Alex are very, very good friends. Like, we're great friends, helping each other out, like, with ideas. So, yeah, I definitely think we're definitely more friends than really competitors,' she concluded.This Sunday promises to be an emotionally charged night on Dancing with the Stars as the remaining nine couples participate in Dedicated Dance Night. Laura and Rhys will dance a Jive to Gold Dust by DJ Fresh in honour of Rhys's coach Luke Carson. Luke has guided Rhys throughout his career, from the lows of falling off the pommel horse mid-routine in Tokyo 2020 to achieving his lifelong dream of winning gold in Paris 2024. Speaking about his dance, Rhys said, 'I dedicated the dance to Luke because I feel like, well, without Luke's help in my career, the gold medal would not exist. It wouldn't be there. It wouldn't be on this island at all. 'So it's a pretty important thing for me to always get back to my coach. I feel like I'm always going to be indebted to Luke in some way. But you know, when you when you think about somebody bringing back an Olympic gold medal, the gold medals around the athlete's neck, it's always the athletes on the front of the TV or on the newspapers and the coaches are often acknowledged in many ways, but then often is the kind of side act, if you will. 'And I feel like it's really important to shed light on the importance of a coach like Luke.'Jack Woolley will dedicate his dance to his friend and two-time gold medal-winning boxer, Kellie Harrington. Jack and his professional dancer Alex Vladimirov will dance an American Smooth to Grace by The Wolfe Tones – a song which has become synonymous with Kellie. Jack’s dedication comes after the support Kellie showed him when he suffered a random assault just weeks after his first Olympic appearance in 2021. Mrs Brown’s Boys actor, Danny O’Carroll will pay tribute to his father, and the show creator, Brendan with a Mrs Brown’s Boys-inspired Cha-cha-cha to She’s a Lady by Tom Jones. Sunday night will continue to be a family affair as comedian Gearóid Farrelly and his partner, Stephen Vincent dance a Paso Doble to Holding Out For a Hero by Bonnie Tyler in honour of his own heroes, his parents, Eamon and Deirdre. Former Miss Universe Ireland, Aishah Akorede and her pro partner, Robert Rowiński will honour Aishah’s mother Kemi who has been the biggest influence in her life and a pillar of support as Aishah has dealt with sickle cell disease throughout her life. They will honour Aishah and her mother’s Nigerian heritage with an African-inspired Samba to Kese (Dance) by Wizkid. Meteorologist Joanna Donnelly and her pro dancer, Maciej Zieba, will Tango to Dreams by The Cranberries
