Peter Bayer has lifted the lid on Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull exit, with the Australian axed by the Visa Cash App RB team following the Singapore Grand Prix back in September
RB CEO Peter Mayer has lifted the lid on Daniel Ricciardo's abrupt exit, with the 35-year-old replaced during the ongoing season by reserve driver Liam Lawson.
"Now, Daniel and us, we were talking on a very regular basis, and then we went into that weekend knowing both of us what the situation was. For a number of reasons we decided to go into trying to keep it public and it proved very, very quickly in the weekend that unfortunately it was not the right decision.
"We knew that we would look a bit outdated as a team. But we also did it to protect the driver. It was his wish. He believed right to the end that he would finish at the front in qualifying and show everyone. "It was a terrible moment when he exited in Q1," Bayer added. "You could already hear on the radio that his world had collapsed. We then spoke to him again on Saturday. We sat together in our office at two o’clock in the morning and asked him what we should do now.
