The 23-year-old is on course to win gold in Paris after producing the fastest time in the 800m Freestyle heats but insists there is much more to come, adding: 'I've never been in this shape before in my life'
Ireland's swimming gold medal favourite Daniel Wiffen feels the stars are aligning after he qualified for tomorrow night's Olympic 800m Freestyle final.
It does, certainly on the basis of the first swim for the 23-year-old at the re-customed La Defense Arena this morning. Wiffen stormed to victory in the fourth of the four heats that doubled up as semi-finals, reeling in and passing two of his main medal rivals Sam Short and Elijah Whittington of Australia.
"You didn’t see my legs come in at the end, so that’s where it is, but holding a good pace, happy with the morning swim and a fast time as well, I’m pretty happy. “The time didn’t surprise me at all, I actually thought I’d be a little bit faster, I was only 0.4 off an Olympic record and no Irishman or woman has ever done that, so that would have been pretty cool to get. But we’ll save that for tomorrow night.
