The killer of Irish tourist Danielle McLaughlin is to appeal his life sentence after a new date was set for the hearing. Bhagat was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2025 following one of the longest-running murder trials involving a foreign tourist in India.

Danielle, from Buncrana, was discovered dead by a local farmer in a field near Canacona, a part of Goa popular with tourists, on March 14, 2017.and murder and he was sentenced to a 'rigorous life sentence.

"Andrea Brannigan, Danielle's sister Joeleen and Danielle's friend Louise McMenamin in Goa Last year when Bhagat was convicted and sentenced, the Goa court noted evidence showed Bhagat had dumped the bag identified as belonging to Danielle after he raped and murdered her. The bag contained a broken pair of glasses and torn clothes, which was key evidence leading to Bhagat's conviction, along with forensic evidence, eyewitness testimonies, and other key details.
Court documents released after Bhagat was sentenced showed that Danielle desperately fought for her life "showing resistance" on the night she was raped and murdered in India. It was also established that Bhagat was the last person seen in Danielle’s company on the night she was raped and murdered. He pleaded not guilty and claimed that he was in a relationship with Danielle and had no reason to murder her.
