SpiderManNoWayHome's visual effects supervisor Kelly Port reveals the small change that was made to Daredevil's scene with Peter Parker.
The visual effects supervisor of Spider-Man: No Way Home reveals how its Daredevil cameo changed in post-production. Directed by Jon Watts, No Way Home saw Tom Holland in his sixth MCU performance as Spider-Man accidentally fractures the multiverse while trying to recover from the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
One factor contributing to No Way Home's immense success was the number of cameos by other Marvel characters in the movie. In particular, No Way Home's Matt Murdock cameo was nominated for Most Memorable Scene at the 2021 Golden Schmoes Awards. In this scene, while Murdock offers Peter Parker legal advice, a brick bursts through the window into the apartment. Murdock demonstrates his super reflexes and catches the brick inches from Peter's outstretched fingers.
"It was a snowglobe. That's one of those creative decisions that came after the fact...You can tell kinda by the shape of his palm that he's actually grabbing something more spherical." As Port pointed out, the post-production change in Daredevil's No Way Home cameo is not completely invisible. It is most apparent when Peter takes the brick from Murdock because he grips the brick awkwardly with three fingers on top and one on its side. Still, without Port explaining the change from snowglobe to brick, that awkward grip could be written off as part of Spider-Man's characterization.
Visual effects are expected in superhero movies because of their larger-than-life characters and situations, but Port's reveal shows how they can be used in unexpected ways. As the MCU grows more and more ambitious and its movies crossover, its VFX teams must push to find new ways to accomplish the studio's demands. Because of this, it wouldn't be surprising if there are even more unexpected changes in the MCU's next phases.
