Darline Graham Wins South Carolina Senate Runoff; Alaska's Unique Midterm Challenge
Darline Graham, Lindsey Graham, South Carolina

Darline Graham, sister of US Senator Lindsey Graham, secures Republican nomination for South Carolina's special Senate election despite lack of legislative experience. In Alaska, Republican Senator Dan S Sullivan faces a unique challenge in the midterms with a similarly named candidate on the ballot.

In a surprising upset, Darline Graham, the sister of US Senator Lindsey Graham, has secured the Republican nomination for South Carolina's special Senate election. With nearly all votes counted, Graham received 52.4% of the vote, defeating five-term congressman Ralph Norman who had 47.6%.

Graham's victory is notable as she had faced criticism for her lack of legislative experience. However, she was boosted by the full-throated support of former President Donald Trump. Graham will now face Democrat nominee Annie Andrews, a Charleston-area pediatrician, in November. Andrews faces an uphill battle as the last Democrat to win a statewide race in South Carolina was in 2006.

Meanwhile, in Alaska, Republican Senator Dan S Sullivan will face a unique challenge in the midterms. A retired schoolteacher and US Forest Service employee, also named Dan Sullivan, will appear on the November ballot alongside the incumbent and Democratic nominee Mary Peltola. The incumbent has condemned the other Sullivan as a 'sham' candidate, but the state supreme court restored him to the race. Alaska uses ranked-choice voting, which could potentially confuse voters and benefit the incumbent.

The primary race saw Peltola and Senator Sullivan leading with 48.1% and 42.8% respectively, while the other Sullivan received 2.5%
