Darvish throws six hitless innings; bullpen blows up in ninth as Padres lose Bob Melvin's first game

Bob Melvin’s first game as manager of the Padres devolved from possibly historic to horrifically epic without much in between on Thursday.

Stammen’s first pitch bounced to the backstop, allowing Christian Walker to jog home. Stammen’s second pitch was launched over the wall in right field. Melvin wasn’t saying so before the game, but the closer the Padres acquired Thursday morning in a trade with the Twins wasn’t available Thursday. Taylor Rogers had thrown in the bullpen the previous afternoon afternoon at Target Field, because the Twins’ opener was postponed by bad weather. Rogers boarded a plane Thursday morning and arrived in Phoenix around 3 p.m.

Bumgarner, the starter for the losing team the previous three opening days against the Padres, had thrown 26 pitches when Thursday’s third inning began.
