In an era when rock stars were shouting and shaking their crotches David Crosby showed us the power of speaking softly and from the heart ✒️ Ed Power
Crosby didn’t invent folk music – but he made it vital, and showed us the power of speaking from the heartDavid Crosby was not the first young man to pick up an acoustic guitar and emote his heart out with a cracked voice and tear-strewn eyes. But, nonetheless made it feel as if he had invented a new kind of music. Crosby took something old and made it fresh and vital. He did so first with The Byrds in the mid-1960s and later as a lynchpin of folk behemoths Crosby, Stills & Nash .
Crosby was always a paradoxical figure; Crosby, Stills & Nash were three musicians from wildly different backgrounds. Crosby the drop-out son of an Oscar-winning cinematographer, Stephen Stills a bad boy from Texas, Graham Nash a classic tunesmith from Salford. Crosby’s sweet murmur entwined that of his bandmates in a way that sounds, even to this day, almost freakishly heavenly. But there was bite to go with the dudes-on-a-porch bromance.
