David Oluwale became the first black man to receive justice against police brutality more than a decade after his death
A third plaque is being put in place in memory of Leeds man David Oluwale after the previous two were torn down.A NEW plaque honouring the legacy of David Oluwale, the first black man to receive justice against police brutality, will be unveiled again at Leeds Bridge after the first was stolen and smeared with racist graffiti.
A temporary plaque was put back on the bridge in July, but it was again stolen. Now a new plaque will be unveiled on September 11. Mr Oluwale, who was born in Nigeria and arrived in Leeds 1949, became the first black person in Britain to receive justice against brutality from police officers when Sergeant Kenneth Kitching and Inspector Geoffrey Ellerker were both prosecuted for the “systemic, varied and brutal” violence with which they treated him.
