showrunner George Kay, the drama recounts not only the murder, but the subsequent, tireless campaign by his widow to find justice for him., playing him with a kind of rare intensity. “It reveals the terrible truth of what was attempted by this gangster who happens to have all this power. It also shows the wonderful victory – and I use that word advisedly – that exists within this. What Putin set out to do was to make sure this story was never told.
Over the next three days before Litvinenko’s death, Hyatt takes 16 hours of statements from him. The former FSB operative details how he has been murdered at the Millennium Hotel in Grosvenor Square by drinking three sips of cold tea poisoned with Polonium-210, the deadliest substance known to humankind.
Propped up on pillows in a green hospital gown, he gives the camera a blank, close-to-death stare. In a flash, the photo – which has since become iconic – is on the front page of every newspaper in the world .Margarita Levieva, who plays Marina, was born in Leningrad and lived in Russia until she emigrated to the US at the age of 11. She says the murder of Litvinenko entirely fits with the image she has of the Russian president. “I was not surprised by it,” she says, “because I grew up there.
“The story that people perhaps don’t know or will have skipped over is the human side,” says Jim Field Smith, the director of the drama. “That’s something we’ve really tried to foreground.”
