Davy Russell's father, Jerry, who passed away last week aged 85, will be laid to rest on Christmas Eve. Jerry had a significant impact on his son's successful racing career and was a respected figure in his community.
The funeral of Davy Russell 's father will take place in Cork on Christmas Eve following his sudden death last week. Jerry Russell passed away aged 85 last Friday. He had a huge influence on his son's career and bred horses, ponies and point-to-pointers. The three-time champion jockey rode a special winner in 2018 when he partnered Youghal By The Sea, who was owned and bred by his father, to victory in a maiden hurdle at Downpatrick in July 2018 when trained by Gordon Elliott.
'It's probably one of the most important winners I've ever ridden,' Davy said afterwards. 'The pressure that was on me coming up the road to here was unbelievable. We travelled up together and he didn't open his mouth the whole way up so I knew there was something on. He is the coolest man of them all.' Jerry was previously chairman of Youghal town council and was involved in his local GAA club, who paid tribute to him after winning the Cork U21B hurling championship final on Sunday. A minute's silence was held in memory of Jerry before the match and he was described as 'a great supporter' following the triumph. Jerry's requiem mass takes place on Christmas Eve at 11.30am in the Holy Family Church, Youghal with funeral afterwards to North Abbey Cemetery
