'There will be many lessons to be learned from what happened in Stoneybatter and that will be dealt with in due course but now all our thoughts and prayers must be with the victims'

The scenes of terror on the streets of Dublin yesterday shows we are no longer safe as we know it and are now prone to random maverick attacks like other parts of the world.

As I keep saying, where would we be without our wonderful men and women of our courageous unarmed police force? We still have no idea what motivated the attacker to harm innocent people who were walking along minding their own business on a Sunday afternoon, in a friendly country which was willing to let him into our homeland to make a new life for himself.

We do know that this suspect was homeless and had been living rough on the streets of Dublin. We have no idea if he had mental health issues or a criminal record. I am all in favour of foreign workers coming in here and contributing to our society once they go through the whole proper visa process.
