The Wild Deer Association of Ireland said Ger O’Brien had been paid by the Department of Agriculture to humanely dispatch the deer, even though it was already dead
The Wild Deer Association of Ireland has insisted that no law was broken during the filming of a bizarre video in which the chairperson of the organisation was recorded shooting a deer that was already dead.
Apart from these concerns, a number of observers also claimed that the deer which Mr O’Brien says he is about to “put down” in the video had, in fact, been dead before he shot it. The WDAI also said that the NPWS guidelines regarding the minimum calibre for hunting deer does not apply to the “humane dispatch” of a deer, for which any suitable calibre of firearm is acceptable.
He then says that he’s “going to cover his head with a blanket first” but proceeds to shoot the lifeless deer in the back of the head without using the blanket that he’s holding in his other hand. The WDAI told the Irish Mirror that the video had been posted on the organisation’s Facebook page by mistake and was removed “because it was not very professional done”.
