The Irish Mirror has confirmed that the Army post at Portlaoise Prison in Co Laois was withdrawn after a ceremony involving Defence Forces and Irish Prison Service personnel on Monday

The Defence Forces have ended their armed patrols of Ireland’s only supermax prison – after more than 50 years.

The army was first drafted into the prison in 1973 - at the height of the Troubles - and a platoon of heavily-armed soldiers guarded the jail every single day since, until Monday. In 1974, armed soldiers had to fire shots during one IRA escape bid – and a year later a member of the Defence Forces shot dead a republican in another attempt to get provos out of the jail.
