16th Mar 2022 There are a dozen 'Fifty Shades of Grey' jokes to be made here, but this house for sale in Clontarf has more allure and charm than the films ever did. For sale last year for €1.85 million, the home of Gerry Ryan’s widow Morah and her children is back on the market once again with a few hundred thousand knocked off the asking price.
Built in 1760, the 266-square-metre home has been extended and refurbished and now boast five bedrooms and three bathrooms. Now on the market for, its location on Castle Avenue in the heart of Clontarf means it really does have everything going for it. While grey isn’t everyone’s choice, the monotone feel of this house somehow works, the plush carpet giving it a warmth alongside pops of vibrant orange and blue. The Gothic elements only add to the intrigue, blending beautifully with the Georgian architecture of the building. Through an expertly manicured topiary garden, the front hall gives a glimpse of what is to come, with dark grey walls and ceilings. Off either side of the hall are two reception rooms, both with mirrored alcoves that enhance light around the room but also add to the moody ambience of the space. Both have beautiful white marble fireplaces. One room is self-contained with a large, ecclesiastical piece sitting at one end. The other room on the left leads into a small reading nook and study space. The kitchen is located at the centre of the home beside the staircase, a modern silver stove sitting in the original chimney alongside mirrored backsplashes. Another, larger living space sits to the rear, in the new extension. With vaulted ceilings and two sets of French doors out onto a small south-facing garden, it’s a snug and cosy place. Inset in the large white stone fireplace is a stove with skylights overhead. A small WC and utility is also accessed from this room. Upstairs are four spacious double bedrooms and one single room, as well as a family bathroom with a free-standing tub. The suite includes a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite, but the second bedroom is almost the same size, with two large sash windows facing onto the front of the house.
