The Merseyside property was hidden by trees for years
A derelict cottage in Merseyside , once hidden from view and with connections to the Titanic, has been revealed. The Chauffeur's Lodge at Thor's Hill off Telegraph Road in Thurstaston, dating back to the 1950s, was used as a chauffeur's accommodation and parking for the main house on the grounds, Thor's Hill.
It is situated on land that was once part of the prestigious Dawpool Estate, purchased by Thomas Ismay, founder of the White Star Line in 1877. Although Thomas Ismay passed away before the Titanic launched, his son Joseph Bruce Ismay was on board the ill-fated maiden voyage and survived the catastrophe, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The main house at Thor's Hill and the Chauffeur's Lodge were constructed for the Morrell family who housed their Rolls-Royce at the lodge. They were later acquired by Bill Davies, former owner of Aintree Racecourse, who also had properties in Chicago and Barbados. Architects have suggested that a chimney on the lodge is indicative of it having had kitchen or sleeping facilities. A planning application, submitted to Wirral Council in July last year, proposed the demolition of the lodge due to its poor condition and the construction of a slightly larger three-bedroom property in its place.
