Here's how to use SPF properly

The Irish obsession with getting a tan has been well-documented. In this warm weather, many Irish people will be out in the back garden, lounging in the sun, or jetting off on holidays to experience far more intense heat and sunshine abroad.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Ireland and cases are rising year on year. Nine out of every 10 skin cancers are caused by UV light radiation from the sun or from sunbeds. 13,000 new cases are diagnosed in this country annually. Worryingly, The National Cancer Registry of Ireland expects this number to double by 2040.

They usually occur in areas of the body that have been exposed to the sun and are more common in older people. “If you had regular sunburn and used a sunbed in your teens or 20s, a lot of damage has already been done. My best advice is to never do sunbeds and wear sunscreen consistently to avoid getting burned,” she says.

This type of light is what causes fine lines and wrinkles to appear on our skin, so sunscreen is very effective for anti-ageing as well as protecting against skin cancer. “You need to reapply every two hours, otherwise the sunscreen will not work. You also need to use a shot glass worth of sunscreen for your face and neck, and on each limb, every time you apply.”

Those who work outdoors, such as builders, gardeners or people who play golf or engage in outdoor hobbies, need to wear sun protection every day. “This is something Irish people do not do,” Prof. Ryan says.
