Mickey Harte’s side must defeat Dessie Dolan’s side in Newry to remain in the 2024 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
It couldn’t happen, could it? By 8.30pm tonight Derry’s Championship hopes will either have been reignited or extinguished and Westmeath will travel to Páirc Esler fully determined to make sure they progress at the expense of the Oak Leafers.
With each defeat, the belief seemed to have drained from Mickey Harte’s side, but they have an opportunity to get their season back on track this evening and it is one they must grasp. Taking the scalp of Derry would see Westmeath through to the last 12 of the Championship and into Monday’s draw for next weekend’s preliminary quarter-finals.
Other rule changes proposed include starting games with one-on-one contests at midfield with the other two midfielders joining the rest of the players behind the 45-metre lines.
