“I’m truly sorry to all of the women that I have impacted in this situation.' Deshaun Watson made his first public apology in a pre-recorded interview that aired in Cleveland.
. The NFL is appealing that suspension and is seeking an indefinite suspension of at least a full season. Watson is eligible to participate in the preseason and training camp, and the Browns named Watson their starter for their preseason opener Friday night in Jacksonville.
The Browns traded for Watson in March after a Texas grand jury declined to indict Watson, but the suspension ruling made by former federal judge Sue L. Robinson said Watson had committed non-violent sexual assault, was guilty of conduct that that posed a genuine threat to the well-being of another person and had undermined or put at risk the integrity of the NFL.
Friday’s contest will mark Watson’s first game action since Jan. 3, 2021, as he sat out last season. It’s also expected that he won’t play again the rest of the preseason, though that could change depending on the result of the appeal. Though the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement calls for an expedited decision of the appeal made by the league on Aug. 4, it remains unknown when a decision will be made.
