Designing a Lived-In Kilkenny Home with a Natural Color Palette

Interior Design News

Interior designer Liz Druhan of South Hill Studio collaborated with clients on a Kilkenny project, utilizing virtual coordination to create a warm, character-filled home that reflects the owners' love of nature and everyday living through a palette of blues and greens.

30th Sep 2026 While we’ve taken to doing many things virtually, building a house is not one of them, but designer Liz Druhan, interior designer at South Hill Studio, found close engagement and clear direction worked perfectly on this Kilkenny project.the design, build and project took place over many Zoom calls, requiring a very clear design direction and careful coordination of decisions, suppliers and installation.

” For Liz, the design challenge was to create a space that felt lived-in for her clients.

“It needed to be infused with character and a sense of permanence but ensuring that it felt natural and warm. ”Her first priority was to understand the client and their needs.

“They wanted an Irish home that felt comfortable and established from the outset,” she explains. “Somewhere suited to everyday living, family visits and entertaining, rather than a house that felt overly formal or precious. ” As nature lovers and keen adventurers it was important to ensure that these aspects were translated in their home environment. To reflect this, Liz chose a colour palette of varying tones of blues and greens for the rooms.

“For the sitting room, I chose Farrow & Ball’s Green Blue because I needed a sophisticated colour that could hold its own amongst an antique cabinet while reflecting warmth,” she explains. “From there, individual rooms were like supporting cast members, in varying light blues and green tones throughout. I designed the kitchen in collaboration with Sinnott Kitchens who have many years’ experience, coordinating the relationship between the materials and the rest of the home.

” Other design factors included texture and lighting, both which have a huge influence on the mood of a room. For the lighting, Liz layered traditional and contemporary pieces “ensuring light could be easily controlled and softened. ” She added depth to each space using textiles such as velvets and linen, alongside wood elements and woven materials.

Bottle green tiles in the bathroom paired with a wooden sink cabinet was a clever way to give this small space the touch of nature the client desired. To help balance the newness of the build alongside creating a space that felt lived-in, Liz sourced and selected vintage and antique pieces to complete the interiors. Chosen with liveability in mind, she wanted pieces that sat easily alongside the contemporary furniture and architecture of the house.

“ Mixing old with new can be a precarious balancing act,” she says. “But it provides a sense of grounded calm to space that can never be underestimated. ” For Liz, it was striking this balance that she believes was the most successful part of the project.

“Although the interior was completed within a concentrated period, it does not feel like it was bought as one furniture package. It feels inhabited rather than installed – and, most importantly, it feels ready for the clients to make entirely their own. ”
