HISD students share stunning speeches on meaning of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Between the uncertainty caused by the pandemic and the fear of school shootings over the past few years, a group of Houston ISD students reflected Friday on the hope they still have for the future.
“My dad is African American and Native American. … My mom is Caucasian. My great-grandmother was part Hispanic,” Kadence said at the historic Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Christ. “Like Vice President Kamala Harris, I’m a regular melting pot.”Kadence Smith, a student from James H. Law Elementary School wins the 2023 MLK Jr. Oratory Competition.Although she is hopeful, she adds that she sees room for progress.
Journey Sensley, the second-place winner from Young Elementary, called on the audience to do more than just hope. “Anybody have a pair of boots?" Xavier asked. “I’m not picky. I’d take some rain boots, some cowboy boots. I just really need a pair of boots.”
