Despite the circumstances of the 12-year-old's death, Lebanon County District Attorney Pier Graf said Maxwell Schollenberger deserves to be remembered as a "happy, sweet and fun" child. Graf shared this photo at the request of Maxwell's family.
A jury found Maurer, 37, guilty of first-degree murder, child abuse and six other offenses Monday after about two hours of deliberation. A 26-year veteran of a Philadelphia homicide unit, regarded as one of the top five child abuse prosecutors in the state, told Graf this was one of the worst child abuse cases he had seen. She agreed.
Schollenberger, up until the pandemic, worked 60-80 hours a week, and turned over care of Maxwell to Maurer, Graf said. And Maurer singled Maxwell out and treated him differently than the other children.
